Introduction

In this unit, we explore the intricate field of biodegradation microbiology, focusing on the interactions among biological, chemical, and environmental factors that drive biodegradation processes. We delve into bioremediation, a critical application of biodegradation, defining and classifying its various types. This includes in situ bioremediation, where contaminants are treated at the site without excavation, and ex situ bioremediation, involving the removal of contaminated material for treatment elsewhere. Understanding these processes is essential for developing effective strategies to mitigate environmental pollution and restore contaminated ecosystems using microbial activity.

Objectives

After going through this unit you will be able to:

  1. explain interaction of biological, chemical and environmental factors in Biodegradation processes;
  2. define process of bioremediation;
  3. describe definition and classification including in situ and ex situ types.
