Introduction

In this unit, we introduce the fascinating field of environmental microbiology, exploring its connections with other allied sciences such as ecology, biotechnology, and environmental engineering. We examine the major groups of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, and viruses, and their critical roles in various environmental processes. The unit delves into the diverse interactions among microorganisms, encompassing neutralism, commensalism, synergism, mutualism, competition, amensalism, parasitism, and predation.

Additionally, we investigate how microorganisms interact with plants and animals, influencing their health, growth, and ecological relationships. Understanding these microbial dynamics is essential for appreciating their impact on ecosystems and their potential applications in environmental management and biotechnology.

Objectives

After going through this unit you will be able to:

  1. explain the microbiology with other allied sciences;
  2. define the microbial interactions like mutualism, commensalism, etc;
  3. relate the interaction of microorganisms with plants and animals.
