Introduction

In this unit, we delve into advanced hazardous waste management techniques, including bioremediation, where microorganisms are used to detoxify hazardous substances. We examine the critical aspects of landfill disposal, focusing on the design and operation of secure landfills to prevent contamination. Special attention is given to the handling and management of various types of hazardous waste, such as biomedical, agricultural, e-waste, and radioactive materials, each requiring specific protocols and technologies.

The unit also covers Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes and mitigation strategies to evaluate and minimize the adverse environmental effects of hazardous waste disposal and management practices.

Objectives

At the end of the unit you will be able to:

  1. explain the management and handling of HW;
  2. explain how bioremediation of hazardous waste takes place;
  3. define agriculture waste, E-waste and radioactive waste management;
  4. know about various mitigation approaches for environmental impacts.
