Introduction 

In this unit, we explore the critical aspects of hazardous waste management, focusing on the safe and efficient collection, transportation, and storage of such materials. Emphasizing worker safety in handling hazardous waste, we address the necessary protocols and protective measures to prevent exposure and accidents.

We also delve into the various treatment processes used to manage hazardous waste, including physical methods (e.g., filtration, sedimentation), chemical treatments (e.g., neutralization, oxidation), and thermal processes (e.g., incineration, pyrolysis). These treatment methods are essential for reducing the toxicity, volume, and environmental impact of hazardous wastes, ensuring safer disposal and compliance with environmental regulations.

Objectives

At the end of the unit you will be able to:

  1. describe the physical, chemical and thermal treatment processes for hazardous wastes;
  2. explain worker safety in Handling Hazardous waste;
  3. describe the collection, transportation and Storage of HW.
