Life-time of a level and Possibility of amplification

Life-time of a level:

The life time of a excited level is defined as the time (τ)(\tau)during which the no. of atoms in it decreases to (1/e)(1/e)times to its initial value.

The life time thus determine with the average time spend by the atom in the excited level. Let the atom in the excited level 2, suppose the no. of atoms at any time  (t)(t)in level 2 is NNThe rate of decay of NNin level 2 would be
